Saving money is always a good thing, and one of the best ways to do this is to be energy efficient. Energy efficiency isn’t just about the money. Energy efficient homes and offices help the planet. But there are often reasons that your home isn’t energy efficient. Let’s explore a few of them.

Lightbulbs

We use our lights all the time, and many of us forget to turn them off from time to time. All of this usage can add to your electricity bill. Finding the right energy efficient light bulbs will help to cut down on the amount of power your lights utilize. LEDs not only will cut down on electricity usage but they also have a much longer lifespan than many other types of light bulbs.

Windows

A significant portion of your temperature control will be lost through the windows. Making sure that your windows are energy efficient will do a large part of the work. Not only do you want thicker glass, but the windows should be installed correctly, and the frames should be sealed.

This sealing goes for doors too. Having them weather-stripped and ensuring they close correctly will maintain the temperature control in your home.

Home Appliances

Inspect all of your home appliances to make sure that they are up to energy efficient standards. Any devices that use unneeded electricity are not energy efficient. Washers, dryers, refrigerators can all be found in energy-friendly models. Some appliances use power even when not on, make sure that these are unplugged when not in use.

Home Design

It turns out that the overall design of your home can play a significant role in your energy efficiency. Crawlspaces are an excellent example of that. Homes with crawlspaces are more likely to lose temperature control through the gap below the house. Similarly, putting a bedroom above a garage or significantly cold place will further hinder energy efficiency.

Starting to plan for energy efficiency is always easiest before your home is built but that doesn’t make it impossible to work on after the house has been completed. A home energy audit can help you to determine your home’s energy efficiency. It will also help you decide where you need to target your efforts.

A lot of energy efficiency comes down to paying attention to your home and doing your research. After that, all you need to do is make the changes.
