Keeping Your Home Decluttered This Year

This year has kept us all in the house more than ever. It's a new year, and it is time to set some resolutions. Since we will continue to spend a lot of time in our homes, one top goal is decluttering and reorganizing our living (and now, working) space. Decluttering an entire home is an enormous task, which is why it is best to attack this task with a plan. Check out the home décor trends for decluttering below to help get started and, most importantly, finish cleaning up and organizing your spaces.

How to Get Started

Make a List

Write down every area of your home that needs to be refreshed. Depending on how you prefer to strategize, start with either the easiest or most challenging room in the house. Check off items on your list as you complete them. As the items are ticked off one by one, a feeling of accomplishment motivates you to continue.

Keep a Schedule

You are more likely to commit to something if you make it a habit, so try setting a designated amount of time every day or every week. Set a reminder on your phone and stick to it.

Create Deadlines

People are much more likely to complete something if they set a date by which it has to be finished. Set a reasonable completion date for each room in your home.

Tell Other People

Sharing your resolution to declutter with family and friends creates a sense of accountability, making you much more likely to stick to your resolution. Better yet, recruit other family members to assist.

What to Toss

Knowing what to keep and what to throw away is likely the most challenging part of decluttering your home. If you are unsure of what to do with something in your home, ask yourself if you have used it in the past year – if not, and it has no sentimental value, then give it a toss.

Four Ways to Part

Organize as you go. Set up four boxes or bags and label them Donate, Recycle, Sell, or Trash. Place each item you are getting rid of in the appropriate receptacle. Try to touch each item you are sorting only once.

Create a Place

Every piece that you keep should have a place within your home. If it doesn't have its place, create one within the room. If an item doesn't have a special place where it can be used or on display - why do you still have it?

Don't Forget the Cabinets

Check expiration dates on items. You are likely to find your fair share of expired cans, spices, medications, skincare products, and much more in the drawers and cabinets. Be sure to dispose of them properly (especially pharmaceuticals).

Now Keep it Clean

Whether you are just trying to organize your space or preparing for a move, keeping everything decluttered and in its rightful place makes for more comfortable living.
