When the time comes to find a new home, there are two options open to you; buying a house or building a custom house. Each option has its practicalities, and there isn’t a right or wrong way to go. In this article, we’ll discuss some of the pros and cons on whether to go for a resale home or a custom-built home.

Let’s say you have decide to build your own home. There are some advantages to doing this; the main one being you have complete design control. If you have always dreamt of having a home look a certain way, then by building it, you can make your vision a reality. Another pro to building your home is that any air conditioning, heating or even solar power fittings you install will be modern, eco-friendly, and cost efficient.

What about the disadvantages to building your own home? Unless you have patience and enjoy paperwork, custom building isn’t going to be for you. With all the regulations and permits needed, the actual construction is sometimes the easy part of the job. There are legal considerations as well – contracts prepared and attorneys consulted. The process of building is long and hard, and if you do not have the time, money or focus, you could find yourself in a pit of problems.

What about buying a resale home? With a resale home, you’ll have more information. Right from the start you’ll know the value of the house and have an understanding of the local area. You’ll also be able to move in much sooner. The entire process is less stressful than custom building. Although it won’t be a hundred percent custom, a new home can be comfortably decorated. Any upgrades you want to make can be put off with a new home, so you can take the time to figure out costs and expenses. What about the disadvantages? New homes often look good, but once you’ve moved in and start to see the imperfections, the shine soon wears off. You also don’t have that custom experience, as the layout is already set.

When contemplating a new home, always think long and hard before going forward, whichever route you decide, you are creating a home and not just a structure.
