How to Care for Different Countertops

When building a custom home, it is always good to have some plans to keep your countertops neat and tidy. The way of caring might vary depending on the type of the material you have utilized for the countertops. Let’s take a look at the ways to care for different countertops that you have in your new custom home.
Granite
You should avoid using abrasives when cleaning granite. Instead, use warm soapy water and a soft cloth to clean it. Removing stains can be done by applying a baking soda paste to the stain, let it sit overnight, and then wipe it off with warm water and a soft cloth. To check the granite sealant, sprinkle some water on it – if the water drops are on the surface and unchanged after 15 minutes, no resealing necessary. If the water has spread and once you wipe the surface there are dark spots, resealing is needed.
Marble
Dilute pH-neutral dishwashing soap in warm water to perform a thorough cleaning. Otherwise, just wipe the surface with a damp piece of cloth. If you spill any acidic liquid on the surface, blot it immediately to prevent permanent marks. However, if the stains occur, you may need the assistance of a professional.
Concrete
To carry out routine cleaning, you can use a very gentle pH-neutral liquid. For instance, use about two tablespoons of dishwashing liquid in a bowl of water or purchase pH-neutral wipes to clean your concrete countertop. The key is to avoid abrasive cleaning materials and wipes; these can damage the surface sealant. When polishing, make sure that you do it in a circular movement. After the cleaning process, you should wipe the surface dry to avoid stains.
Soapstone
When you are building a custom home, you should know that soapstone countertops are hard to maintain. Soapstone is a soft stone, and it chips easily. Cleaning soapstone requires the additional attention of professionals.
Quartz
Perform necessary cleaning by rinsing the countertop with water using a sponge or a piece of cloth to dry the surface. Wipe down countertops after cooking or meal preparations to avoid staining. Solid stains or messes can be removed with a flexible plastic scraper (don’t use metal – it will scratch or gouge the surface).
Natural stone countertops give a beautiful richness to any kitchen, with proper and consistent care, they can last a lifetime.
